New Homes As Unique As You Are

Wyndham Homes' "Create Your Own Home" System Allows Buyers to Design Their Dreams.

The Journal News

Patterson, NY – We Americans may believe we're all created equal, but that doesn't mean we're all the same. We know as individuals we're unique, each with our own special needs, tastes and dreams. So if our pursuit of happiness includes buying a new home, why should we be limited to the few design choices offered by most builders? Why should it be a struggle to take that Colonial style exterior we love and add a portico over the front door? And why should changing the floor plan to include that much-needed home office, or romantic bay window lead to such aggravation that we fear we'll need our own architects' license to get things right?

A welcome solution to this dilemma is the new "Create Your Own Home" floor plan system created by Wyndham Homes, Inc. By selecting from a series of pre-designed floor plan elements, homebuyers can take different options and fit them together like puzzle pieces to create their own unique layout. The system makes it possible for homebuyers to add a home office or additional private bath, bump up the sizes of rooms, even move the laundry to the second floor with ease (and without an architect's degree). The floor plan can then be paired to any of the exterior designs Wyndham Homes offers in several classic architectural styles. But the flexibility doesn't end there. The exteriors can also be enhanced by adding a portico, dormers or a Palladian window, even changing the roofline. Once the options are selected, the homebuyer is provided with a custom drawing of their new home to ensure the image matches their vision. The process results in new homes as unique as the homeowners. Wyndham Homes sales manager Connie Lauterbach explains, "This method of building gives folks a sense of ownership right from the start."

Lauterbach likes to begin the process by taking customers on a tour through a Wyndham Homes community. "It's especially helpful to get feedback on their likes and dislikes," she explains. "Sometimes Mister and Missus don't agree, but in the end he may get the billiard room he'd always wanted while she may add the bay windows she loves." A drive through Windsor Woods in Patterson reveals a neighborhood of luxurious homes each with its own distinct character. Lauterbach describes some of the different elevations (exterior designs) available: the Contemporary Colonial with its dramatic entry and clapboard-style siding; the Classic Colonial featuring a front portico; the Country Colonial with a full covered front porch; the Dutch Colonial with Gambrel-style roof and covered front porch; the Georgian featuring a brick front with shutters, and porch or portico; the Federal with brick front and cultured stone window details; the French Provincial displaying a genuine stucco front highlighted by quoins (corner stones) and window details; and the New England Shingle with a front of genuine cedar shakes with cultured stone accents and window details. The diversity of styles adds to the appeal of the neighborhood while the quality of the home designs creates a remarkable cohesiveness amid the variety. The final impression is one of a community of refined elegance.

According to Wyndham Homes president Richard Schunk, the key to flexibility is pre-designing the options to fit together. "We want to enable homebuyers to custom-tailor their homes without an arduous process," he says. "They should have the choices they want. It's our job to be sure those options are designed to fit together. Our sales team works closely with our homebuyers and guides them through each step of the process. With our "Create Your Own Home" system, the home choices are as limitless as your imagination."
